HEE FCP (Paramedic) Roadmap Stage 1 Webinar
  • Provided by BNSSG Training Hub
  • Running on Tuesday 14 September | 19.00 – 20.00
  • Held via Microsoft Teams
  • Open to any and all interested parties

BNSSG Training Hub will be delivering a FREE, virtual webinar on the HEE FCP (Paramedic) Roadmap to Practice this coming Tuesday 14 September, from 19.00 – 20.00. Facilitating will be Lily Dixon, the Training Hub’s Paramedic Lead; Kerri Magnus, Advanced Practice Lead; and Rachel Butt, qualified HEE Roadmap Supervisor.

We are aware of the uncertainty around the HEE Roadmap, so we hope that – in sharing the learning we’ve accrued with you and your colleagues – we can help to clarify things, both for paramedics and supervisors, be they AHPs, GPs, or GPNs. To this end, Lily has mapped herself against stage 1 of the HEE Roadmap and designed her PDP against stage 2; this, in combination with her responses to the knowledge, skills, and attributes (KS&A) section, will be discussed and examined for examples of potential evidence for the portfolio route. There will be time to answer your questions, too, so do bring them along.

If this webinar is relevant and of interest to you, do come along – there’s no limit on numbers, so feel free to invite any colleagues, too.

For further information, please use the button below to access the sign-up form or contact Kerri at kerri.magnus2@nhs.net.

Is remote consulting compatible with personalised care or does something have to give?

In a new report commissioned by the NHS Personalised Care Institute, and conducted by researchers from the National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration West (NIHR ARC West) and the University of Bristol’s Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC), the relationship between personalised care and remote consulting is examined. Both are at the forefront of NHS England’s agenda, but the distance between clinician and patient afforded by remote consulting is not necessarily conducive to creating health plans jointly them.

In addressing this potential conflict, researchers sought to answer the following questions:

  • How does remote consultation affect access to healthcare and quality of care?
  • Is remote healthcare as good as face-to-face?
  • When are remote consultations not suitable?
  • Can personalised care be delivered remotely?

In short, the report concludes that remote consultations are not inherently good or bad, with their effectivity being dependent on the patient’s needs, life stage, and finances. Health professionals are advised to think carefully about how to use remote consultations, and for what purpose, and to enable patients in having a choice about how their consulted.

          General Practice Teaching Workshops

BNSSG Training Hub has arranged for a series of online workshops to be run this autumn, exploring the themes of Well-Being, Shared Decision Making, and Risk Management. Spearheaded by Dr. Alice Blackwell, one of the Hub’s GP Fellows, these workshops are principally aimed at newly-qualified GPs, GPNs, and ANPs, but admission may be opened up to a wider audience in due course — please keep an eye out!

Further information on each of the workshops is available below:

          Well-Being Workshop

Running from 14.0017.30 on Tuesday 5 October, to be delivered by Hannah Miller (Founding Director of Sidekick and Gallup-certified Strengths Coach), this session will consider:

          • How is your well-being?
          • Gallup research into well-being – rooted in science and actionable in your daily life
          • The 5 areas of well-being: what they are, what they look like in our lives, and how we might take steps to improve them
          • Form an action plan and shift the needle towards a healthy, thriving lifestyle
          Shared Decision Making Workshop

Running from 14.0017.30 on Tuesday 12 October, to be delivered by Dr. Shaba Nabi (Clinical Lead for a vibrant, inner city practice in Bristol). This session will feature an interactive, practical workshop on shared decision making.

If you have not already, it would be beneficial to watch the 1-hour Awareness Raising webinar we released, in conjunction with Dr. Nabi, in early 2021. To watch it, please click here.

          Risk Management Workshop

Running from 14.0017.30 on Thursday 14 October, to be delivered by Dr. Kathy Ryan (GP and Medical Director of BrisDoc). This interactive session will delve into Clinical Risk, Fear, and Courage, exploring our fears behind the cases that keep ups awake and night and discussing the factors which can support courage, enable us to sleep, and – at the same time – keep the patient centre stage.

These sessions are now open to GPs, GPNs, and APNs across the region!

To register your interest in any of these sessions, please contact Jessie Saul at jessie.saul@nhs.net.

          Buddy Meetings for return-to-work GPs

For the next phase of BNSSG Training Hub’s ongoing support for GPs returning to work from short career breaks, Dr. Pamela Curtis will be holding Buddy Meetings on the last Wednesday of each of the next few months.

These meetings will provide a safe space to discuss the things that matter to you – be it clinical work, career goals, or well-being – and in a format of your choosing (as a ‘study group’, via action learning sets, etc.). It is hoped these will increase the confidence of and support for GPs returning to practice.

Planned dates are as follows, from 20.00 – 21.00 on each day:

          • Wednesday 26 January | Click here to register interest

If you know a colleague for whom this will be of interest and is currently on-leave, please do forward it on to them.

To be kept in the loop and register your interest in later dates, please contact
          bnssg.training.hub@nhs.net using the button below.

This FREE, full-day course will run on Thursday 29 September

Are you a BNSSG-based GP due to return or recently returned to clinical work after a prolonged absence (due to parental leave or ill health, for instance)? Would you like to boost your confidence and feel supported in your transition back to work following your career break?

Shape support for GPs returning from short career breaks

Dr. Pamela Curtis, GP Fellow for the Hub, invites GPs to participate in a short, anonymous questionnaire to help mould an ongoing project designed to increase support for, and retention amongst, members of the GP workforce.

The survey is aimed at GPs who are (or have been) out of the workplace on a short career break for 3 or more months in the preceding 2 years, or who are planning to take a short career break. It will evaluate perspectives on support available to, and the confidence of, these GPs upon their return to work, with a view to development and implementation of extra support, including ‘return to work’ courses.

This survey is but one part of this work, with a focus group involving a smaller sample of GPs scheduled to be run in May. If you would be interested in participating, please enter your details at the end of the survey or send a message to zach.barber@nhs.net / pamela.curtis1@nhs.net.

The deadline to respond is Thursday 6 May, in advance of the first event we intend to run, informed by this survey and the focus group, in mid-June.

For more information, and to access the survey, please use the buttons below.

Spearhead a project to reduce health inequalities
Open to all GPs, GPNs, and AHPs in BNSSG

We are offering a 12-month Population Health Fellowship, beginning this March, designed by Professor Maggie Rae (President of the Faculty of Public Health). This will be a fantastic chance for a primary care clinician to not only develop their leadership and management skills, but also to bolster their knowledge of Population Health and health inequalities.

Population Health work aims to improve the health and well-being of a group or population of people, and to reduce inequality in health outcomes, requiring action to address the wider, social determinants of health and involving collaboration with communities and organisations beyond the NHS. For more information on the significance of Population Health, please download the Fellowship rationale below.

You will work for 2 sessions (1 day) per week with the STP Population Health Management Team, to deliver a Population Health improvement project with a focus on reducing health inequalities. You will receive educational supervision from a local Public Health Consultant, training from the South West School of Public Health, and an education & training allowance for any relevant courses and qualifications. Again, for more information, please download the Fellowship details and Fellowship rationale documents below.

This offer is open to all GPs, GPNs, and AHPs in a substantive role in a GP practice in Bristol, North Somerset, or South Gloucestershire. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates. But do please note that applications must be in by Friday 29 January — to apply, please send your CV and a covering letter to Dr. Sarah Ballisat at sarah.ballisat@nhs.net.
