Report on remote consulting in primary care

Covering the implementation of remote consulting following the COVID-19 pandemic
N.B. this study has not yet been peer reviewed, however

To help combat the spread of COVID-19, general practices quickly introduced a raft of remote consultation measures back in March — a RAPCI research article posted on Thursday 22 October, on Research Square, investigates the impact of this rapid implementation, using 21 practices in BNSSG as the basis for the study.

The shorthand conclusion is, word for word, as follows: “The shift to remote consulting was successful and a focus maintained on vulnerable patients. It was driven by the imperative to reduce contagion and may have risks; post-pandemic, the model may need adjustment.”

To read the rest of the study, please click the button below — but do bear in mind that this is a pre-print, preliminary report which has not yet been peer reviewed, and so it should not be considered conclusive nor inform clinical practice.

CLiP PCN Project

For the attention of all PCNs
Get involved with this HEE-funded project

This is a HEE pilot to increase student nurse placements across the South West, with a call for 1 – 2 PCNs in BNSSG to host 4 – 8 students via the Collaborative Learning in Practice (CLiP) model. This coaching model tasks students from different years with taking the lead in caring for patients, and entrusts them with supporting and learning from one another.

Participating PCNs will not only receive support from the Training Hub and local HEIs, with staff being provided preparatory training, but they will also be able to claim a one-off £3,000 support payment (available per PCN, and alongside the usual weekly tariff of £87 per week).

In addition to expanding student nurse placements, the project is intended to raise the quality of learning environments, promote general practice nursing careers, assess the CLiP model’s suitability for other professions, and provide research output and case studies.

To watch a promotional video about how the CLiP model works in general practice, please click here.

The pilot will begin in January and is limited to two PCNs

GPN Well-being & Peer Support Group

Need a helping hand?

“It’s not always about getting or giving advice. It’s also about having a safe space to get things off our chest and occasionally sharing a laugh about it all!” (Mind, 2020)

BNSSG Training Hub is pleased to offer a monthly 1- / 1.5-hour online peer support group for those new to general practice nursing. This session will be limited to 4 places on a first-come, first-serve basis, but we welcome all expressions of interest as we endeavour to provide further sessions soon.

The initial session will be running on a Thursday afternoon, once a month, with the final date to be confirmed, and it will be facilitated by a clinician with a special interest in the health and well-being of health professionals.

What is peer support?

Peer support is when people use their own experiences to help each other. It comes in different forms, but they all aim to:

  • Bring people with shared experiences together, to support one another
  • Provide a safe environment wherein you feel accepted and understood
  • Treat everyone’s experiences as equally important
  • Involve both giving and receiving support

The benefits include:

  • Having the opportunity to reflect
  • Building resilience and improving well-being
  • Sharing your own experiences, new ideas, best practice, and research
  • Making links with other professionals and having the opportunity to build supportive networks

Newly Qualified GP Fellowship Programme

A two-year programme of personalised support for NQGPs | Apply today!
What is this?

Provided by NHS England / Improvement, Healthier Together, and BNSSG Training Hub, this two-year programme has been devised to help newly qualified GPs to gain confidence at work and develop enjoyable, fulfilling, and sustainable careers in general practice.

NHS England have announced the National Newly Qualified GP Fellowship Programme will close on the 31st March 2024. We know this news will come as a significant disappointment. All Fellows currently on the programme, or who join before the 31st March 2024 will receive their full 2 years of funding and support. We would like to encourage anyone who is eligible to contact us asap. You will be eligible to join the programme if you are a Newly Qualified GP and you have a permanent job in a practice in BNSSG starting on or before 31st March 2024.

If you participate in this programme, you will be supported with:

  • Funded CPD Time: Fellows will receive paid, protected time for continuing professional development activities
  • Induction: To both the Fellowship Programme and their practice and primary care network (PCN)
  • Clinical Supervision: A clinical supervisor, with whom you will meet once a month, will be provided by your practice
  • Mentoring: You will also be matched with an experienced local GP mentor, with whom you will meet once a month
  • Peer Support: You will be offered the chance to join a peer support group with other newly qualified GPs
  • Career Development: The Training Hub will share learning and development opportunities, with an emphasis on portfolio working, and provide access to career coaching
Who can join this programme?

This programme is intended for newly qualified general practitioners (GPs). More specifically, to participate, you must:

  • Be working in a permanent salaried, partner, or retainer role in a GP practice in Bristol, North Somerset, or South Gloucestershire
  • Start this programme within 12 months of your CCT date; this can be extended to 18 months if personal circumstances come into play

If you are an international medical graduate (IMG), you are welcome to apply for this programme if you fulfil the above criteria.

What do practices need to know?

There are several benefits for practices participating in this programme, as follows:

  • You will attract and retain newly qualified GPs in permanent roles
  • Your newly qualified GPs will receive extra support as they start independent practice
  • Fellows can use their funded CPD time to keep up-to-date clinically, gain additional skills that may be of use to the practice, and contribute to practice / PCN projects

As to what practices need to do to participate in this programme, you need to:

  • Provide an induction to the practice and primary care network (PCN)
  • Nominate a clinical supervisor — an experienced GP with whom the fellow can meet for one hour per month, for the duration of the fellowship (please note: no funding is available for this role)
  • Consider what career development opportunities you can offer the fellow (e.g., shadowing, leadership and management roles, quality improvement projects, etc.)
How do I apply?

To apply, please follow these steps:

If you have any questions, please contact sarah.ballisat@nhs.net.

Please find the memorandum of understanding (MoU) and programme brief (featuring more information on funding for protected CPD time, in particular) available for download below.
