Open to all roles in primary care
General information:
We have arranged for a second run of this autumn’s Motivational Interviewing training. Having previously only been open to GPNs, this next run is open to all members of the primary care workforce, regardless of experience.
To be delivered and facilitated by Behaviour Change Training (BCT) once more, this course will focus on skills development and encourage you to reflect on current practice. It is scheduled to begin in January, and will consist of 2 x online learning modules and 3 x facilitated workshops.
The online modules:
These can be completed at your leisure, at a time of your choosing — so long as the first module is completed in January, and the second in February. Each module should take between 2 – 3 hours to complete.
The workshop in January will revolve around Patient-Centred Communication, and upon completion, you will be able to:
- Explain how good communication skills can influence everyday practice for both practitioners and patients, thereby improving outcomes
- Observe and accurately label related skills within a well-defined model
- Plan next steps to implement the skills learnt in practice
- And more…
The February workshop will focus on Enhancing Patient Motivation, and will aid participants in:
- Defining motivation and motivational interviewing
- Identifying the skills and strategies required to use motivational interviewing
- Acknowledging the complexities of influencing motivation
- And more…
The workshops:
As to the workshops, these are all due to take place in February. You will be in a group of 3, for 3 x 1-hour sessions.
These workshops will provide a productive environment in which to practice and develop patient-centred communication skills:
- Focusing on the beginning of the consultation — meeting and greeting using first contact skills
- Practising the skills of paraphrasing and questioning, and if appropriate providing information effectively
- Practising the skills of reflecting feelings and summarisation
