Photo from National Cancer Institute (2)
Running on Tuesday 31 January | 09.15AM - 02.45PM
What is this, and who is it for?

This educational event is aimed at all clinicians who take cervical smears and will cover trauma-informed care, supporting all individuals with a cervix (including trans and non-binary patients) to access:

  • Cervical screening
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Reasonable adjustments
  • And use of the left lateral approach for taking a cervical smear

This event is entirely FREE to attend, having been funded by SWAG Cancer Alliance; as there is a cost to running the event, however, please only book if certain you’ll be able to make it on the day.

Where will this be?

This is a hybrid education event, with places available both face-to-face at Engineers House (BS8 3NB) and virtually, via Microsoft Teams.

Expressions of interest should be submitted through our sign-up form below, and any questions to Dr. Glenda Beard at glenda.beard2@nhs.net.

          Online Dermoscopy Education

          Photo from Jan Antonin Kolar
New sessions from Thurs 12 Jan - Thurs 9 March, 2023

Do you need to brush up on your knowledge and management of skin lesions? Does your practice have a dermatoscope, but you haven’t had the training to use it?

This training will be delivered again by Dr. Chin Whybrew, an experienced GP with a passion for primary care dermatology (and dermoscopy in particular).

These sessions are FREE to attend and open to any primary care clinician who assesses skin lesions in the following areas:

          • Somerset
          • Wiltshire
          • Avon
          • Gloucestershire

If you have not attended this training before, please attend the sessions in sequence, as they do build on one another.

For more information, please expand the boxes below.

Online Dermoscopy for Beginners Part 1

This half-day, virtual session will be delivered via Zoom and cover the following:

          • How dermoscopy works and practical tips, including how to get good dermoscopy photos and troubleshooting tips
          • A practical demonstration of the commonly-used scopes, including how to turn it on, focus it, charge it, clean it, etc.
          • Interpretation of dermoscopic structures in benign lesions (seb K, angiomas, warts, dermatofibromas, sebaceous hyperplasia, comedones), BCCs, and melanomas — and how this always needs to be taken in clinical context
          • How to put this all together into a simple algorithm
          • Other uses of dermoscopy in primary care

This session is next available on Thursday 12 October, from 01.30PM05.00PM.

Online Dermoscopy for Beginners Part 2

This is a follow-up session from Part 1, and we recommend you get used to handling the scope for several weeks in between sessions. It will cover:

          • Recap of how to use the scope, benign lesions, and BCCs
          • Actinic keratosis, Bowen’s, and SCC
          • Special sites – palms, soles, and faces
          • More about naevi and melanomas
          • More BCCs including pigmented and superficial BCCs

This session will next be available on Thursday 9 November, from 01.30PM05.00PM.

Online Dermoscopy for Not-So-Beginners Part 3

This is aimed at people who are reasonably confident using a dermatoscope and have done the first two parts of the three-part course. We recommend practising with the scope in between the first two parts and this one. It will cover:

          • Troubleshooting tips, and photography techniques
          • Recap of commonly-seen lesions in primary care
          • The “chaos and clues” algorithm for pigmented lesions
          • “Prediction without pigment” for non-pigmented lesions

This session will be next be available on Thursday 14 December, from 01.30PM05.00PM.

The next of BNSSG Training Hub’s GP Buddy Meetings is this Wednesday 24 November, from 20.00 – 21.00. These meetings, arranged by one of the Hub’s GP Fellows, Dr. Pamela Curtis, offer a safe space for GPs returning to work after a short career break (due to parental leave, ill health, or caring responsibilities).

This is an opportunity in which to discuss the things that matter to you – be it clinical work, career goals, or your personal well-being – and in a format of your choosing (as a ‘study group, via action learning sets, etc.). Increase your confidence, and support colleagues in a similar boat.

To register for the next GP Buddy Meeting, please complete the application form.
Is remote consulting compatible with personalised care or does something have to give?

In a new report commissioned by the NHS Personalised Care Institute, and conducted by researchers from the National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration West (NIHR ARC West) and the University of Bristol’s Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC), the relationship between personalised care and remote consulting is examined. Both are at the forefront of NHS England’s agenda, but the distance between clinician and patient afforded by remote consulting is not necessarily conducive to creating health plans jointly them.

In addressing this potential conflict, researchers sought to answer the following questions:

                          • How does remote consultation affect access to healthcare and quality of care?
                          • Is remote healthcare as good as face-to-face?
                          • When are remote consultations not suitable?
                          • Can personalised care be delivered remotely?

In short, the report concludes that remote consultations are not inherently good or bad, with their effectivity being dependent on the patient’s needs, life stage, and finances. Health professionals are advised to think carefully about how to use remote consultations, and for what purpose, and to enable patients in having a choice about how their consulted.

The session is open to the whole practice team, including admin, reception, IT, secretaries, HCAs, social prescribing link workers (SPLWs), practice managers, and PCN project managers. The whole practice team can make changes that are patient-facing, but also systems- and processes-facing. A collective, ‘community of practice‘ approach is encouraged.

                                  • Running on Tuesday 14 September | 19.00 – 20.00
                                  • Held via Microsoft Teams
                                  • Open to any and all interested parties

BNSSG Training Hub will be delivering a FREE, virtual webinar on the HEE FCP (Paramedic) Roadmap to Practice this coming Tuesday 14 September, from 19.00 – 20.00. Facilitating will be Lily Dixon, the Training Hub’s Paramedic Lead; Kerri Magnus, Advanced Practice Lead; and Rachel Butt, qualified HEE Roadmap Supervisor.

We are aware of the uncertainty around the HEE Roadmap, so we hope that – in sharing the learning we’ve accrued with you and your colleagues – we can help to clarify things, both for paramedics and supervisors, be they AHPs, GPs, or GPNs. To this end, Lily has mapped herself against stage 1 of the HEE Roadmap and designed her PDP against stage 2; this, in combination with her responses to the knowledge, skills, and attributes (KS&A) section, will be discussed and examined for examples of potential evidence for the portfolio route. There will be time to answer your questions, too, so do bring them along.

If this webinar is relevant and of interest to you, do come along – there’s no limit on numbers, so feel free to invite any colleagues, too.

For further information, please use the button below to access the sign-up form or contact Kerri at kerri.magnus2@nhs.net.

With an eye to the NHS Long-Term Plan’s goals, the HEE National Workforce Transformation team are offering to train primary care colleagues in BNSSG to use the HEE Star. The Star has been used by the team to address workforce challenges and define innovative workforce solutions across the country, as outlined in the videos linked below:

HEE is confident that increased use of the HEE Star model throughout primary care will support delivery of both integrated working and new roles. This training is available in two parts: Level 1 is an introductory webinar, and Level 2 – aimed at those experienced with facilitating workforce change or required to by their role – consists of two sessions followed by a HEE Star workshop focused on local primary care workforce challenges. Both levels are available this September.

Further information on both Levels 1 and 2 can be found in this document, produced by HEE.

If you or a colleague join either level of the HEE Star Training, the Training Hub requests that you contact us, too, at bnssg.training.hub@nhs.net. In your message, please confirm:

The forum runs three times a year to update GPs on cancer-related topics, including the PCN DES / QOF, and to provide a space in which to share successes and discuss challenges.

Practices and primary care networks are invited to nominate a GP as their Cancer Lead, but all other practice colleagues are welcome to attend.

To register a space, please complete the short application form.
If you have any questions, please submit them to bnssg.training.hub@nhs.net.
