The Five Behaviours of a Cohesive Multidisciplinary Team programme
          • Provided by South West Leadership Academy and Enono
          • Running on Wednesday 19 January, 2022 (cohort 1) and Wednesday 2 February, 2022 (cohort 2) | 9.30 – 13.00, both cohorts

          • Open to established MDTs, or individuals looking to form one, in primary care

This programme is designed to enable individuals working in, or wishing to work in, a multidisciplinary team in a primary care network to understand what’s needed in building a cohesive team. Running from 9.30 – 13.00 on two standalone dates, this programme will see you exploring and learning to master these five required behaviours:

          • Building vulnerability-based trust
          • Mastering open conflict
          • Achieving commitment
          • Embracing accountability
          • Focusing on results

In so doing, team members can expect to work together more efficiently and effectively, and will:

          • Make better decisions, faster
          • Tap into the skills and opinions of all members
          • Avoid wasting time and energy on politicking, confusion, and destructive conflict
          • Avoid wasting time talking about the wrong issues and revisiting the same topics repeatedly, because of a lack of buy-in
          • Discuss and agree shared team goals

For more information, please click the button below.

These meetings, arranged by one of the Hub’s GP Fellows, Dr. Pamela Curtis, offer a safe space for GPs returning to work after a short career break (due to parental leave, ill health, or caring responsibilities).

This is an opportunity in which to discuss the things that matter to you – be it clinical work, career goals, or your personal well-being – and in a format of your choosing (as a ‘study group, via action learning sets, etc.). Increase your confidence, and support colleagues in a similar boat.

To register for the next GP Buddy Meeting, please complete the application form.

          FCP / AP Directory Update
          •  Provided by Amanda Hensman-Crook (Allied Health Professionals National Clinical Fellow, HEE / Consultant MSK Physiotherapist) and Richard Collier (Lead for the Centre for Advancing Practice in England, HEE)

The Centre for Advancing Practice, which is part of Health Education England, is continuing with its plans to recognise the education and training that first contact practitioners and advanced practitioners successfully complete. The Centre’s portal will be the hub through which individuals will provide evidence that they have completed an accredited AP programme or the FCP Roadmap.

The Centre is moving into the digital era by bringing forward plans to allow FCPs and ACPs to be able to generate their own ‘digital badges’ once recognised. Next year, they will be developing digital passports which will provide individuals with abilities to link to a range of credentials and qualifications, and to be able to use these in many areas of practice as evidence of Centre recognition.

The decision, that was announced at the recent AP Conference, not to pursue the option of a searchable directory that listed clinicians who had successfully completed the recognition process for FCP, or AP, was made to enable the more flexible and functional solution of digital badges. This option also allays concerns that publishing a practitioner directory may give the impression that HEE has a regulatory function, which is not the case. The Centre will continue to list programmes that it has accredited and credentials that it has endorsed.

This decision does not impact on the actual recognition process itself. We understand that clinicians who do complete the roadmap will be enabled to create a digital badge from the Centre’s portal. We await further confirmation of exact details and will update when we know more.”

                  • Provided by The ACP Forum & BNSSG Training Hub
                  • Running on Wednesday 17 November | 12.30 – 13.30
                  • Held via Microsoft Teams
                  • Open to advanced clinical practitioners

The world of advanced practice is undergoing dramatic shifts, both locally and nationally; but that doesn’t mean you can’t soar!

To support practices with these changes, BNSSG Training Hub’s ACP Lead and chair of The ACP Forum, Kerri Magnus, will be running PCN Advanced Practice Leads Meetings monthly.

These meetings will focus on strategic issues, such as funding and career pathways, acting as a portal through which to disseminate new information and updates around advanced practice. They will also support attendees in developing as leaders, providing an opportunity to discuss support needed.

                  Attendees should be:

                  • Advanced practitioners willing to circulate information to the rest of the advanced practice workforce in their PCN
                  • Able to attend monthly meetings

Meetings will be held on alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 11.00 – 12.00. The first will be on Wednesday 10 November, to discuss the new radiological protocol for first contact, enhanced, and advanced practitioners, and provide an introduction to the Health Education England (HEE) Advanced Practice Demand Survey, due to come around in March 2022.

To register your interest or nominate a colleague, please contact Kerri at kerri.magnus2@nhs.net.

Is remote consulting compatible with personalised care or does something have to give?

In a new report commissioned by the NHS Personalised Care Institute, and conducted by researchers from the National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration West (NIHR ARC West) and the University of Bristol’s Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC), the relationship between personalised care and remote consulting is examined. Both are at the forefront of NHS England’s agenda, but the distance between clinician and patient afforded by remote consulting is not necessarily conducive to creating health plans jointly them.

In addressing this potential conflict, researchers sought to answer the following questions:

                  • How does remote consultation affect access to healthcare and quality of care?
                  • Is remote healthcare as good as face-to-face?
                  • When are remote consultations not suitable?
                  • Can personalised care be delivered remotely?

In short, the report concludes that remote consultations are not inherently good or bad, with their effectivity being dependent on the patient’s needs, life stage, and finances. Health professionals are advised to think carefully about how to use remote consultations, and for what purpose, and to enable patients in having a choice about how their consulted.

                          Cancer Screening Awareness Session

                          Photo from National Cancer Institute
                          On Thursday 7 October

From 12.45 – 14.00 on Thursday 7 October, Dr. Glenda Beard (Macmillan GP Cancer Lead), Georgia Diebel, and Trudi Smith (both Cancer Research UK Facilitators) will be delivering an information session on cancer screening for practices in Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire.

The session is open to the whole practice team, including admin, reception, IT, secretaries, HCAs, social prescribing link workers (SPLWs), practice managers, and PCN project managers. The whole practice team can make changes that are patient-facing, but also systems- and processes-facing. A collective, ‘community of practice‘ approach is encouraged.

HEE FCP (Paramedic) Roadmap Stage 1 Webinar

On the evening of Tuesday 14 September, we delivered a free webinar on the HEE FCP (Paramedic) Roadmap to Practice. Lily Dixon, the Training Hub’s Paramedic Lead facilitated alongside Kerri Magnus (Advanced Practice Lead( and Rachel Butt (qualified HEE Roadmap Supervisor).

The webinar was intended to help dispel the uncertainty around the Roadmap‘s portfolio route, with Lily mapping herself against stage 1 of the Roadmap and designing her personal development plan against stage 2; this, in combination with her responses to the knowledge, skills, and attributes (KS&A) section, provided the basis for an exploration of examples of potential portfolio evidence.

                                  • Running on Tuesday 14 September | 19.00 – 20.00

                                  • Open to any and all interested parties

BNSSG Training Hub will be delivering a FREE, virtual webinar on the HEE FCP (Paramedic) Roadmap to Practice this coming Tuesday 14 September, from 19.00 – 20.00. Facilitating will be Lily Dixon, the Training Hub’s Paramedic Lead; Kerri Magnus, Advanced Practice Lead; and Rachel Butt, qualified HEE Roadmap Supervisor.

We are aware of the uncertainty around the HEE Roadmap, so we hope that – in sharing the learning we’ve accrued with you and your colleagues – we can help to clarify things, both for paramedics and supervisors, be they AHPs, GPs, or GPNs. To this end, Lily has mapped herself against stage 1 of the HEE Roadmap and designed her PDP against stage 2; this, in combination with her responses to the knowledge, skills, and attributes (KS&A) section, will be discussed and examined for examples of potential evidence for the portfolio route. There will be time to answer your questions, too, so do bring them along.

If this webinar is relevant and of interest to you, do come along – there’s no limit on numbers, so feel free to invite any colleagues, too.

With an eye to the NHS Long-Term Plan’s goals, the HEE National Workforce Transformation team are offering to train primary care colleagues in BNSSG to use the HEE Star. The Star has been used by the team to address workforce challenges and define innovative workforce solutions across the country, as outlined in the videos linked below:

HEE is confident that increased use of the HEE Star model throughout primary care will support delivery of both integrated working and new roles. This training is available in two parts: Level 1 is an introductory webinar, and Level 2 – aimed at those experienced with facilitating workforce change or required to by their role – consists of two sessions followed by a HEE Star workshop focused on local primary care workforce challenges. Both levels are available this September.

Further information on both Levels 1 and 2 can be found in this document, produced by HEE.

If you or a colleague join either level of the HEE Star Training, the Training Hub requests that you contact us, too, at bnssg.training.hub@nhs.net. In your message, please confirm:

                                          General Practice Teaching Workshops

BNSSG Training Hub has arranged for a series of online workshops to be run this autumn, exploring the themes of Well-Being, Shared Decision Making, and Risk Management. Spearheaded by Dr. Alice Blackwell, one of the Hub’s GP Fellows, these workshops are principally aimed at newly-qualified GPs, GPNs, and ANPs, but admission may be opened up to a wider audience in due course — please keep an eye out!

Further information on each of the workshops is available below:

Running from 14.0017.30 on Tuesday 5 October, to be delivered by Hannah Miller (Founding Director of Sidekick and Gallup-certified Strengths Coach), this session will consider:

                                          • How is your well-being?
                                          • Gallup research into well-being – rooted in science and actionable in your daily life
                                          • The 5 areas of well-being: what they are, what they look like in our lives, and how we might take steps to improve them
                                          • Form an action plan and shift the needle towards a healthy, thriving lifestyle
                                          Shared Decision Making Workshop

Running from 14.0017.30 on Tuesday 12 October, to be delivered by Dr. Shaba Nabi (Clinical Lead for a vibrant, inner city practice in Bristol). This session will feature an interactive, practical workshop on shared decision making.

If you have not already, it would be beneficial to watch the 1-hour Awareness Raising webinar we released, in conjunction with Dr. Nabi, in early 2021. To watch it, please click here.

                                          Risk Management Workshop

Running from 14.0017.30 on Thursday 14 October, to be delivered by Dr. Kathy Ryan (GP and Medical Director of BrisDoc). This interactive session will delve into Clinical Risk, Fear, and Courage, exploring our fears behind the cases that keep ups awake and night and discussing the factors which can support courage, enable us to sleep, and – at the same time – keep the patient centre stage.

These sessions are now open to GPs, GPNs, and APNs across the region!
