Practice and PCN Management Development: Supporting the people behind great general practice

Over the past year, the Practice and PCN Management Development (PPMD) programme has been bringing together current and aspiring managers from across BNSSG general practice to learn, connect and share experience.

Developed collaboratively by the BNSSG Training Hub, One Care, Avon Local Medical Committee (ALMC) and the Institute of General Practice Management (IGPM), the programme aims to provide pragmatic development opportunities, peer support and clearer routes to learning for non-clinical leaders within our practices and PCNs.

A year of learning and connection

Since launching in September 2025, PPMD has delivered a growing programme of events and development opportunities, including webinars, workshops and an annual conference. Topics have ranged from finance, strategic planning and CQC, through to HR and workforce retention – creating opportunities for colleagues to develop their knowledge, make connections and build confidence.

Explore your learning choices

One of the priorities identified through our stakeholder feedback was the need for clearer visibility and understanding of the many training and development opportunities available. In response, the programme has launched a new infographic, designed to help colleagues navigate the range of learning and development options available to support the different stages of their management career.

The infographic brings together development opportunities covering a number of areas such as practice management, PCN leadership, project management, strategic management and leadership development. Rather than following a fixed pathway, colleagues can choose individual modules, combine subjects of interest, build learning over time, or access structured learning through an apprenticeship to create a personalised development journey.

What’s next

The PPMD programme will continue to evolve in response to the experiences, priorities and development needs of practice and PCN colleagues across BNSSG. Building on the progress made so far, our focus remains on creating practical learning opportunities, strengthening peer networks and making it easier for colleagues to access the support and development they need.

Our plans include:

  • Regular opportunities to connect and learn through a continuing programme of quarterly events, webinars, workshops and the annual conference.
  • Expanding learning and development opportunities for colleagues at different stages of their management and leadership journey, working in partnership with colleagues and partners across the system.
  • Ongoing collaboration and co-production with our steering group of practice and PCN management colleagues, continuing to shape future priorities and ensure the programme remains relevant and responsive

We’d love to hear your ideas for future training and development opportunities, as well as your feedback on PPMD so far. Please contact bnssg.training.hub@nhs.net to share your thoughts.
