Advanced Practice

What is Advanced Practice?

Advanced practice is delivered by accomplished registered health and care professionals. It is a level of practice characterised by a high degree of autonomy and designated responsibility for complex decision making. This is underpinned by a post-registration master’s level award or equivalent undertaken by an experienced practitioner that encompasses all four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research.

Advanced practice embodies the ability to manage care in partnership with individuals, families, and carers. It includes the analysis and synthesis of complex problems, and management of clinical risk and uncertainty across a range of settings, enabling innovative solutions to expedite access to care, optimise people’s experiences, and improve outcomes

The Difference Between Enhanced and Advanced Level of Practice

Advanced Practice Preceptorship

Preceptorship is a structured period of support and guidance provided to newly registered healthcare professionals or those transitioning into new roles, helping them build confidence, competence, and integrate into the workplace. It’s a key component of professional development, particularly for nurses and other healthcare workers, during their initial transition from student to autonomous practitioner.

FREE Advanced Practice Preceptorship Programme

Designed and delivered by members of the Advanced Practice Faculty and Advanced Practice Forums for Mid and South Essex and the EoE Primary Care Advanced Practice Forum.

Advanced Practitioner Preceptorship Programme

The purpose of this module is to foster the development of a highly skilled and knowledgeable advanced practice workforce capable of delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care. It emphasises the integration of the most current evidence-based practices, ensuring practitioners are equipped with up-to-date research and best practices to guide their clinical decision-making.

Key components:

  1. Safe and Effective Care Delivery: Practitioners will gather evidence in their portfolio’s to demonstrate delivery of care that is both evidence-based and patient-centred, ensuring optimal outcomes while minimising risk. This includes the application of critical thinking skills and clinical judgment in complex situations.
  1. Evidence-Based Practice: The module prioritises the use of the latest, high-quality research in shaping clinical decisions. By staying current with emerging evidence, practitioners can ensure their care is both scientifically grounded and reflective of the best available practices.
  1. Comprehensive Knowledge and Skills Development: Learners will gain deep expertise in the areas of practice offered, sharpening their clinical and technical skills while continuously reflecting on and improving their practice.
  1. Leadership and Role-Modelling: In addition to clinical expertise, this module emphasises the importance of leadership and professional role-modelling. Advanced practitioners will learn to mentor, guide, and inspire others in their professional community by embodying best practices, ethical standards, and exemplary behaviours in all aspects of their work.

By completing this module, advanced practitioners will be equipped to take on leadership roles within their clinical settings, drive change, and contribute to the overall advancement of healthcare standards.

Who is this module for?

  • Newly qualified multi-professional advanced practitioners currently working in primary, urgent and community care settings and are expected to see a broad range of physical health conditions.
  • Multi-professional advanced practitioners moving from a specialist area of practice to a broader scope of physical health conditions, such as those transferring from secondary care to primary, urgent, or community care settings.
  • Any multi-professional advanced practitioner that would like to develop new areas of physical health capabilities while working in a primary care, urgent care or community care setting seeing a broad scope of patients.

The preceptorship module is intended to take up to 12 months to complete and includes:

  • 10 area specific capabilities in frequently seen areas of clinical practice for primary, urgent or community care settings
  • A number of tool templates to support with the completion of capabilities
  • A capability matrix to keep track of evidence within a practitioners portfolio

It is recommended that the practitioner reads through the programme first while saving the downloadable capabilities and templates either during the read through or when they are ready to build their evidence.

The programme will take 1-2 hours to read through, and can be completed in multiple sittings. Users can mark each section complete using the button at the bottom of the page as they work through the programme and progress will be recorded.

Users will be able to go back and download documents and re-read sections at any time.

eLFH Multi-Professional Preceptor e-Compendium Programme

The aim of the Preceptor eCompendium is to recognise the needs of the preceptor, too, and to provide them with the guidance, support, resources and practical tools that they need for this role. It aims to help them reflect on their own experiences of this transition into the workforce, and to optimise their knowledge and skills to best position themselves to support others. It also supports the preceptor to develop valuable skills that will help them in other supporting roles that they will find themselves taking on during their current or future roles.
