Enhanced Practice Advanced Practice Consultant Practice“Advanced practice is delivered by accomplished registered health and care professionals. It is a level of practice characterised by a high degree of autonomy and designated responsibility for complex decision making. This is underpinned by a post-registration master’s level award or equivalent undertaken by an experienced practitioner that encompasses all four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research.
Advanced practice embodies the ability to manage care in partnership with individuals, families, and carers. It includes the analysis and synthesis of complex problems, and management of clinical risk and uncertainty across a range of settings, enabling innovative solutions to expedite access to care, optimise people’s experiences, and improve outcomes”
The education level of enhanced practice covers the graduate professional workforce who are delivering the majority of clinical activity, those who have moved beyond novice/competent and who are not working at the level of advanced practice.

This framework offers a clear and practical guide for those developing their expertise in the 4 key areas of clinical care, leadership, research, and education and incorporates updated evidence, insights, and contributions from advanced practitioners. Whether you are an advanced practitioner yourself, aspire to be one, or are relying on or supporting the development of advanced practitioners in your area, we urge you to explore the framework and build on the vital contributions these roles make.
The South West Faculty for Advancing Practice was established in August 2020, with the aim of providing support and guidance to aspiring and current advanced practitioners, organisations, Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs) and Integrated Care Systems (ICS). We recognise the impact that advanced practitioners can have on workforce transformation, providing highly skilled care that can drive service redesign, enhance patient care, and improve outcomes. The function of our Faculty is to lead and promote advanced practitioners as part of national and regional workforce solutions and to enable practitioners to practice to their full potential.
The Centre for Advancing Practice have developed a maturity matrix which health and care organisations across all settings can formatively self-assess their progress on the governance of advanced practice. Below you will find a link to Governance Matrix Information and access to the document.

Preceptorship is a structured period of support and guidance provided to newly registered healthcare professionals or those transitioning into new roles, helping them build confidence, competence, and integrate into the workplace. It’s a key component of professional development, particularly for nurses and other healthcare workers, during their initial transition from student to autonomous practitioner.
Designed and delivered by members of the Advanced Practice Faculty and Advanced Practice Forums for Mid and South Essex and the EoE Primary Care Advanced Practice Forum.
Advanced Practitioner Preceptorship Programme
The purpose of this module is to foster the development of a highly skilled and knowledgeable advanced practice workforce capable of delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care. It emphasises the integration of the most current evidence-based practices, ensuring practitioners are equipped with up-to-date research and best practices to guide their clinical decision-making.
Key components:
By completing this module, advanced practitioners will be equipped to take on leadership roles within their clinical settings, drive change, and contribute to the overall advancement of healthcare standards.
Who is this module for?
The preceptorship module is intended to take up to 12 months to complete and includes:
It is recommended that the practitioner reads through the programme first while saving the downloadable capabilities and templates either during the read through or when they are ready to build their evidence.
The programme will take 1-2 hours to read through, and can be completed in multiple sittings. Users can mark each section complete using the button at the bottom of the page as they work through the programme and progress will be recorded.
Users will be able to go back and download documents and re-read sections at any time.
The aim of the Preceptor eCompendium is to recognise the needs of the preceptor, too, and to provide them with the guidance, support, resources and practical tools that they need for this role. It aims to help them reflect on their own experiences of this transition into the workforce, and to optimise their knowledge and skills to best position themselves to support others. It also supports the preceptor to develop valuable skills that will help them in other supporting roles that they will find themselves taking on during their current or future roles.
