Workplace Clinical Supervision training

A promising, new opportunity for GPNs

The Training Hub is looking for 1 GPN per PCN to undergo training to become workplace Clinical Supervisors. This will involve participation in a half-day training course and committing to re-evaluation over regular intervals for the following 12 – 18 months.

Applications are welcomed from GPNs with at least 2 years’ experience and a diploma in a particular field (e.g., diabetes). Applicants will need to have the support of their practices and have sufficient time to carry out the role.

The training dates are: Wednesday 10 February (9.30 – 13.00) or Thursday 18 March (13.00 – 16.30).

INTERACT study

A new way of delivering CBT

For patients with depression

The University of Bristol’s Centre for Academic Primary Care and Centre for Academic Mental Health are developing a new way to deliver cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for patients with depression, called INTERACT, which blends high-intensity therapy with new applications for technology.

A trial programme for it will begin recruiting patients in the next few weeks, with the goal being to recruit over 400 in the next two years, from GP practices in Bristol, London, and York. GPs can refer patients, with potential participants being identified during consultations or from patient records. Participants will randomly receive either usual care or usual care plus the INTERACT CBT intervention.

Participants receiving the intervention will be offered nine sessions of therapy; the first will be delivered face-to-face or by video call, and subsequent sessions will be delivered using instant messaging. Participants will also be able to access the study website and CBT materials at any time, as working outside the therapeutic session is an important ingredient in the effectiveness of CBT.

Blended Learning

Study your way

Predominantly remote learning, so you can be flexible with your time

Developed by HEE and HEIs across England – and in conjunction with an advisory group featuring representatives from partner organisations – the Blended Learning programme has been established to address national shortages in clinical expertise and to offer predominantly virtual, remote-access study to individuals unable to study for a healthcare role in a traditional fashion.

This programme will be trialled via a nursing degree programme, to start in early 2021. Trainee nurses will have easy access to new and emerging technologies, helping them and their employing trusts to meet the requirement for strong digital capabilities, whilst also furnishing the NHS will an up-to-date, adaptable workforce.

The aims of this programme are to:

“Provide a technology framework that enables student-led provision, online communities of practice leading to development of engaged and self -directed learners with strong digital capabilities”

“Develop flexible, adaptable, resilient, curious, collaborative learners and professionals”

“Attract greater numbers and a more diverse student population into the health profession”

“Create a significantly different offer in healthcare professional education, that will support the growth of a qualitatively different, expert and professional workforce suited to the demands of care now and in the future”

“Fully exploit digital technologies to deliver fully interactive and integrated programmes including immersive technologies like Virtual and Augmented Reality”

Report on remote consulting in primary care

Covering the implementation of remote consulting following the COVID-19 pandemic

N.B. this study has not yet been peer reviewed, however

To help combat the spread of COVID-19, general practices quickly introduced a raft of remote consultation measures back in March — a RAPCI research article posted on Thursday 22 October, on Research Square, investigates the impact of this rapid implementation, using 21 practices in BNSSG as the basis for the study.

The shorthand conclusion is, word for word, as follows: “The shift to remote consulting was successful and a focus maintained on vulnerable patients. It was driven by the imperative to reduce contagion and may have risks; post-pandemic, the model may need adjustment.”

Open to all roles in primary care

General information:

We have arranged for a second run of this autumn’s Motivational Interviewing training. Having previously only been open to GPNs, this next run is open to all members of the primary care workforce, regardless of experience.

To be delivered and facilitated by Behaviour Change Training (BCT) once more, this course will focus on skills development and encourage you to reflect on current practice. It is scheduled to begin in January, and will consist of 2 x online learning modules and 3 x facilitated workshops.

GPN Well-being & Peer Support Group

Need a helping hand?

“It’s not always about getting or giving advice. It’s also about having a safe space to get things off our chest and occasionally sharing a laugh about it all!” (Mind, 2020)

BNSSG Training Hub is pleased to offer a monthly 1- / 1.5-hour online peer support group for those new to general practice nursing. This session will be limited to 4 places on a first-come, first-serve basis, but we welcome all expressions of interest as we endeavour to provide further sessions soon.

The initial session will be running on a Thursday afternoon, once a month, with the final date to be confirmed, and it will be facilitated by a clinician with a special interest in the health and well-being of health professionals.

What is peer support?

Peer support is when people use their own experiences to help each other. It comes in different forms, but they all aim to:

Bring people with shared experiences together, to support one another
Provide a safe environment wherein you feel accepted and understood
Treat everyone’s experiences as equally important
Involve both giving and receiving support

The benefits include:

Having the opportunity to reflect
Building resilience and improving well-being
Sharing your own experiences, new ideas, best practice, and research
Making links with other professionals and having the opportunity to build supportive networks

Of particular note is the RCN’s new podcast, Nursing whilst black, in which nurses, healthcare support workers, and students from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds share their reflections of and experiences of working in healthcare, along with insights into how we can all address the issue of racism.
